Are you looking for fun things to do in Massachusetts but aren’t sure where to start?
You’re in luck! Massachusetts has tons of fun things to do that, so many that I literally couldn’t choose. Despite growing up here in MA, there are still things I haven’t gotten to experience because the list is just so long.
In fact, Massachusetts has tons of fun things to do for kids, teens, young adults, and parents alike. So whether you’re looking for something fun for the whole family or just want a break from your studies or work, there’s something here for everyone.
Here are my favorite things to do in Massachusetts that are on my ultimate bucket list!
57. Visit Fenway Park
If you’re a fan of baseball, then things to do in Massachusetts don’t get much better than taking a trip to Fenway Park.
The home field of the Boston Red Sox (and one of the oldest ballparks still standing), Fenway Park is worth visiting just for its historic value alone. Plus, it’s right next to Yawkey Way which makes it easy to drop by afterwards for some awesome food and drinks at one of the many nearby pubs.
You can actually attend a game (nosebleed tickets are often quite cheap) or you can just hang around outside and grab a hot dog and a beer. It’s definitely a vibe, regardless of whether you’re actually inside.
There’s no telling when your team will make it to the World Series again!
56. Go On A Lighthouse Tour
Head out onto Cape Cod Bay and see some lighthouses up close and personal with one of these tours. Trust us when we say it’ll be worth the drive.
You can also see a variety of lighthouses on the North Shore, one of which was built in 1784. In fact, you could literally spend days going up and down the coast in Massachusetts to check out different lighthouses.
If you’re a fan of coastal history then this will definitely be on of your favorite things to do in Massachusetts!
55. Spend A Day At Plimouth Plantation
As a child, I loved Plimouth Plantation. It’s quite literally a recreation of the Pilgrims’ village, complete with actors in costume.
Plimouth Plantation will keep you entertained for hours on end. You’ll also learn so much about the Pilgrims and Native Americans who once called this land their home. Both sections are equally amazing!
The Plantation is open from May to October, so check out Plimouth Plantation during your next trip to Massachusetts – it’s definitely one of the things to do in Massachusetts worth checking out!
54. Check Out Old Sturbridge Village
Artistic and historic, Old Sturbridge Village is one of the only outdoor museums in all of New England that focuses on New England history.
This place is great for families and provides a really cool look into what life was like back in colonial times. So if you’re looking for some free things to do in MA, definitely check out Old Sturbridge Village!
53. Go On A Sailing Adventure
The Boston Harbor is a wonderful place for a sailing adventure. Whether you’re looking for things to do in Massachusetts on the water or just want to spend time outside, this is an activity that will definitely have you coming back for more!
For those of you who are into kayaking, then check out the Boston Harbor Islands . They’re just off shore, so it’s really easy to get there.
The view is worth the trip alone!
52. Head To Salem For A Spooky Afternoon
Salem is a town full of Halloween things to do in Massachusetts, but the spooky vibe hangs around Salem all year round.
If you’re into history, then you’ll love the various museums and monuments in Salem dedicated to the witch trials. There are also lots of fun things to do in Salem, such as bar-hopping, shopping, getting a reading, and more.
Check out Salem MA if you’re interested in a spooky day trip! It’s only about a half hour away from Boston and is totally worth the trip.

51. Walk The Freedom Trail In Boston
The Freedom Trail is 4.5 miles of things to do in Massachusetts where you can take a step back in time and learn things about Boston that aren’t taught in school.
We recommend walking the trail, but you could also bike or even drive if you like. It’s totally up to you!
The Freedom Trail is one of the most classic things to do in Massachusetts. Everyone should do it at least once.
50. Tour The Halls & Grounds Of Harvard University
Harvard University is one of the most prestigious things to do in MA, even if you’re not a potential student.
It’s also absolutely massive, so you’ll need several days to even scratch the surface of all things Harvard!
The campus looks like something out of a movie – it’s definitely worth the visit. I especially love Harvard Square, plus Cambridge is a really fun area of the city to check out.
49. Attend A Celtics Game At TD Garden
The Celtics are one of the most successful things about Boston.
I remember seeing them win the Big Ten Championship when I was younger and thinking that they would surely go onto win an NBA championship (of course, they’ve lost since then). Nonetheless, attending a game at TD Garden is always a great time.
I highly recommend taking advantage of things like the CityPass if you’re into sports. It has special rates on things like tickets and actually saves you money! Plus there are lots of other things to do in Boston that the CityPass works for, too.
48. Visit The Hammond Castle Museum In Gloucester
Located in Gloucester Massachusetts, Hammond Castle is literally a medieval replica castle right on the water.
Hammond Castle houses an old fashion museum and a huge library (and is home to like 50 cats). It also has a small lighthouse and lots of beautiful grounds that you can tour for free.
Even if you’re not into creepy things or history, then check out Hammond Castle – it’s definitely one of the most entertaining things to do in MA.
47. Hang Out On The Boston Common
The Boston Common is basically America’s oldest public park. It’s worth checking out just for the history alone, not to mention all of the amazing things to do in Massachusetts that are available there.
You can ice skate on Frog Pond during wintertime, or you can take a stroll through some beautiful gardens. You might even see horses strolling around!
The Boston Common is totally one of those places where it feels like time stands still, which makes it perfect for relaxation and reflection.
46. Go Kayaking On The Charles River
Even if you don’t own a kayak, then go rent one for an hour or two on the Charles River. If you’re into nature, then this is definitely of those wonderfully relaxing things to do in Massachusetts.
The Charles River is a great place to escape from the hectic hustle and bustle of Boston. Plus, there are lots of wildlife areas to check out as well if you’re into nature – I always see tons of ducks!
45. Check Out The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Park In Scituate
Located in Scituate, the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Park actually holds some of the best whale-watching tours in Massachusetts.
You can take one of these tours for free if you visit during peak whale season (May 1st through November 15th), or else they’ll only cost you $5 bucks!
If you’re into whales (or just nature in general), then definitely check out the national marine park – it’s one of my favorite places to sightsee in Massachusetts.
44. Walk The Minute Man National Historical Park In Concord
Minute Man National Historical Park is a wonderful place to see if you’re into history and American stories.
It’s actually extremely small, but extremely fascinating. Plus it’s free!
The park consists of the famous site where the “shot heard ’round the world” was fired and Paul Revere made his famous midnight ride.
You can also find some trails through meadows and garden areas that were once owned by families who fought during the Revolutionary War.
43. Go On A Sailboat Ride In Gloucester
Gloucester is such a gorgeous city with so many great places to explore – I highly recommend taking a sailboat ride while you’re in the area.
If you’re a beginner, then check out a 1 hour sunset sail around Gloucester Harbor – it’s a great way to spend an evening and is one of those wonderfully relaxing things to do in Massachusetts.
42. Take A Ferry To Nantucket
There’s nothing like taking a ride on the old fashioned red-sailed ferry that will bring you over to Nantucket from Hyannis.
It’s so much fun, and there are lots of amazing things to do in Massachusetts get up close with nature on Nantucket. There’s nothing like a preppy summer in Nantucket!
41. Visit The John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum In Hyannis
Located right down the street from where the JFK museum is located, there’s actually another amazing museum you should check out while you’re in Hyannis!
The outside of the building looks like a castle, and you’ll get to go inside and see lots of fun exhibits about Kennedy’s life. You can even play a part in a political debate!
The Kennedy Hyannis Museum is definitely one of those places where you’ll learn tons about our country’s history – definitely one of my favorite things to do in Massachusetts while I’m on Cape Cod.
40. Tour The Norman Rockwell Museum In Stockbridge
Just an hour away from the city of Boston, Norman Rockwell’s museum holds hundreds upon hundreds of original pieces by the famed artist.
I actually visited it on a field trip in middle school and remember seeing some pretty interesting things. If you’re into art or just history, then this is one thing to do in Massachusetts worth checking out!
39. Sightsee At The Museum of Fine Arts In Boston
The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston holds the largest art collection in all of New England.
If you like wandering through historic buildings and checking out some amazing art, then this is one thing to do in Massachusetts worth considering!
38. Explore The Boston Public Library
Located in downtown Boston, The Boston Public library contains over 10 million books and counts everything from Mark Twain to George Washington as part-time denizens.
This library is definitely my favorite place to go if I ever need a quiet moment alone with my thoughts (or just want some peace and relaxation). It’s truly one of those uniquely American things that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
37. Take The Kids To The Edaville Family Theme Park In Carver
The Edaville Family Theme Park is one of the only theme parks in all of New England that’s family-friendly and totally free!
If you’re bored and looking for something to do, then this is definitely one of those wonderfully relaxing things to do in Massachusetts. The Edaville Family Theme park even has a small zoo as well as a petting farm, so your kids will literally never be bored here.
36. Take A Hike Through The Blue Hills Reservation In Milton
The Blue Hills reservation is located not too far outside of Boston, so it’s easy to get to even if you don’t have a car. Plus, there are plenty of trails depending on what kind of activity you’re looking for (hiking, biking, horseback riding, etc.).
I recommend trying out the Mugford Trail because it leads you into the thick of some beautiful forested areas while also providing some awesome views of Boston in certain spots. Go check this place out – it’s basically like getting two things done in one (exercise + sightseeing).
35. Check Out The Franklin Park Zoo In Boston
Located right across from The Museum of Modern Art, this zoo is a great place to spend all day.
If you have kids or just want some chill time with friends, then the Franklin Park Zoo is one cool thing to do in Massachusetts that will provide lots of opportunities for fun and relaxation!
34. Shop On Newbury Street In Boston
The most famous shopping street in Boston, Newbury Street is the place to go if you like browsing around posh shops while drinking your coffee.
If you’re looking for some high-quality souvenirs for yourself or loved ones, then this is definitely one of those vacation things to do in Massachusetts that will not disappoint!
33. Visit A Quaint New England Town
One of the things that makes Massachusetts so unique is the variety of towns. Whether you want to go vintage or modern, there’s definitely a small town in Massachusetts that you’ll love.
32. Visit Walden Pond In Concord
Henry David Thoreau wrote his famous book by this pond, so it’s a must-see location when visiting Massachusetts.
It feels very homey and there are always tons of people biking or jogging around with their dogs or kids, so it’s a lot of fun to visit.
31. Watch A Boston College Eagles Game At The Conte Forum In Chestnut Hill
For all the sports fans out there, this arena is a great place to check out. It always feels super intense since BC students are always cheering from the crowd and it feels like you’re right in the middle of action when watching a game here.
Plus, there’s also a ton of food places nearby that allow you indulge while watching your favorite team play.
30. Check Out The Blue Hills Observatory & Science Center In Milton
If you want some educational fun for your kids or just want to learn something new yourself, then definitely check out this science center! They have lots of cool exhibits and telescopes on site where you can get an up-close look at space.
29. Visit Battleship Cove In Fall River
One of the largest collections of historic naval ships in all of New America, Battleship Cove is a great place to learn about US history while also having some fun.
They have tons of cool activities on site, from games for kids to museum exhibits and actual battleship tours! So if you want a unique thing to do in Massachusetts that will provide lots of educational value, then this is a must-visit location!
28. Go Ice Skating In Boston At The Frog Pond
If you’re looking for free things to do in Massachusetts with your family or friends during winter time, then going ice skating might be just what you need. Plus, it’s really nice to walk around while sipping hot chocolate.
Mmmm, nothing says winter time in New England more than mugs of cocoa and ice skating!
27. Stroll down Rockport’s Bearskin Neck
With a charming collection of boutiques, art galleries and the historic Chesapeake Mill, this colorful strip will take you from fresh paint to vintage treasures.
I absolutely love Rockport during the summer! There’s nothing like the old-school vibes of the streets here. It’s a little preppy but a lot vintage.
This is a great place to do a little shopping, check out the marina, and grab an ice cream.
26. Head To The Berkshires For Some Time In Nature
It’s not an obvious pick for vacation spots, but the Berkshires are prime New England nature. If you’re looking to escape the hustle of urban life, then definitely drive up into these hills and dive into a world of beauty.
They have everything from artists’ workshops to farms that grow all sorts of produce, so no matter what your interests may be there’s something here for everyone!
25. Go To The Cape Cod Lavender Farms
If you’re looking for a cool place to take your kids or if you just want to indulge in some beautiful views of the springtime, then definitely visit the Cape Cod Lavender Farms.
They always have tons of lavender plants and flowers growing all over the hillsides, plus they also provide activities like hiking and birdwatching tours! So if you love nature and you want to try something new, make sure to check out this spot!
24. Go To The Massachusetts State Fair In West Springfield
The largest agricultural event in New England, this fair has everything from farm animals and carnival rides to art exhibits and live music performances. Plus it’s only open from the last week of August until Labor Day so there won’t be much time to wait until you can check it out.
And if you’re from New England, then this fair is a given! It’s the perfect place to get together with family and friends for a day of fun in the sun.
23. Visit The Skywalk Observatory In Boston’s Prudential Center
A great way to see the city skyline, this observatory is free and provides some pretty incredible views. If you’re looking for a quick tour of Boston without having to spend hours on end inside museums or traipsing around neighborhoods, then definitely come here!
It’s especially nice during rain or snow since they have an enclosed viewing area so it never feels bad weather-wise when visiting here even when there are strong winds outside.
22. Check Out Old Cemeteries
Whether you want to explore famous plots or search for the resting places of famous (and infamous) people, cemeteries are a fascinating place to visit. They provide an interesting look into how generations before us used to live and can also serve as beautiful parks.
Most of the towns in Massachusetts are super old so you can learn a lot about history in just about every cemetery around here!
21. Spend A Day By The Water In Newburyport Massachusetts
A historic seaport from the late 1700s, Newburyport is a great place to go if you’re interested in history and maritime culture. It’s also home to the Plum Island Reservation, perfect for outdoorsy types who want to explore nature and see some migrating birds!
Downtown Newburyport is super cute, with a bunch of boutiques and trendy restaurants. I especially love visiting Newburyport during the summer months. Growing up, visiting Newburyport was one of my favorite things to do in MA.
20. Check Out The Local Breweries In Boston
Boston is a great city for craft beer lovers because there are tons of local breweries all over the place, especially around Seaport! So definitely go out for a tasting and check out one or two of these spots.
19. Visit The Plymouth Rock In Massachusetts
This historic landmark commemorates the day in 1620 when pilgrims first landed on shore in America. It’s an iconic spot to visit if you want to learn more about American history and see where one of the biggest cultural events took place!
18. Visit The Homes Of Literary Legends In Concord
From Thoreau to Emerson, these writers have all lived in Concord at one point. So if you want to learn more about the background of some of America’s finest literary minds, then definitely head to Concord!
Plus, these homes are all right by Walden Pond so you can pay a visit to that as well if you’re interested in seeing nature like Thoreau was back during his time.
17. Stay at the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast
If you’re a fan of “Lizzie Borden took an axe,” then this is the perfect place to stay! Known as one of the most haunted places in America, it’s fun just staying here even if you don’t run into any spirits.
16. View Bash Bish Falls
This natural wonder is actually the highest waterfall in Massachusetts, located on the border of New York State. The views are absolutely epic and if you’re into nature then definitely visit here!
The only drawback is that there isn’t much to do around this area besides hiking along trails so you’ll need to either spend a night somewhere or make it a day trip.
15. Learn About History At The New Bedford Whaling Museum
This is one of the best museums in Massachusetts, dedicated to telling the stories of sailors and whalers back during the 19th century. So if you want to get an idea of what life was like for many families living here during that time period, then definitely explore this museum!
It’s also right on the waterfront so even if you don’t want to go inside, just walking around outside can be great fun!
14. Go On A Whale Watching Tour
If you’re into nature and especially marine life then taking a whale watching tour might be perfect for you. From April through October there are often tours available where people travel out into deep waters off New England in search of whales. It’s super cool seeing these beautiful creatures up close!
13. See A Patriots Game (Or Visit Patriots’ Place)
This probably goes without saying that if you’re into football then there is no better place to be than in the heart of an NFL team’s stadium!
If you happen to go when it’s not game day, though, I also recommend checking out Patriot Place because it has tons of great restaurants and is really fun for people watching.
12. Visit Blantyre In The Berkshires
This is one of the most well-known mansions in America, so if you’re into American history and architecture then definitely check it out!
Blantyre is also located in one of the most beautiful parts of Massachusetts – The Berkshires. So even though it’s technically just a big tourist trap, there are tons of great things to do around this area during your stay.
11. Tour The Peabody Essex Museum In Salem
Salem is filled with strange history, but this museum has some of the best artifacts around. For example, it contains one of the largest collections of Asian art outside of Asia itself!
It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re into art and American culture.
10. Try All The Flavors At Bassetts Ice Cream In Northampton
No matter what your favorite flavor is, it’s going to be amazing here. From pine needle ice cream to pina colada to peppermint stick, the flavors are all super creative and delicious.
I can’t imagine a better place for people who love sweet foods!
9. Check Out Hancock Shaker Village In Pittsfield
Located in Pittsfield, this is considered to be the best living history museum around. So basically think of it as a historical Disneyland that you can explore at your own pace!
Plus, there’s so much culture here due to its strong connection with nearby Shakers. That also makes it an interesting place for people interested in learning about how religion shaped society during the 19th century.
8. Learn About The Boston Marathon At The John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo
This is one of the most well-known events in America – almost any active person knows that if they want to run 26 miles then they need to run the Boston Marathon! Which means that if you’re into fitness and endurance activities then definitely check out this expo.
The expo itself lasts for three days with the main event running on Patriot’s Day. This is one of the biggest days in Massachusetts so it’s worth checking out even if you can’t participate!
7. Visit The Litchfield Observatory In Harwinton
If science is your jam then visiting this observatory will be like taking a trip to heaven. There are tons of telescopes and space exhibits, but most importantly you’ll get to star gaze an evening!
Just make sure that you call in advance because they only allow small group tours here (usually in the summer).
6. Eat Lobster At Red’s Eats In Wiscasset
This is definitely the epitome of New England cuisine – everyone knows that Lobster Rolls are amazing!
Of course, you’re not going to want to go too far out of your way because again this is basically just a tourist trap. So in other words if you’re in the area then yes stop by here but don’t make it part of your trip’s main activities.
5. Hang Out At Faneuil Hall Marketplace
This is a really cool part of town that contains Quincy Market, which has tons of different food stands. So it’s basically like visiting a permanent state fair!
It’s also worth checking out this area in case you’re in the mood to go and shop for some trinkets (it’s more like shopping in an outdoor market but whatever).
4. Visit The Freetown-Fall River State Forest In Dartmouth
This is definitely one of the most beautiful places around so if you enjoy being surrounded by nature then check this place out!
Hikes are great here, but there are also plenty of other activities too. For example, they have an obstacle course – so you want to try something new then definitely check this place out!
3. Go Whitewater Rafting In The Quinebaug River
This is one of the best places in Massachusetts to do this activity due to all the different rapids. So it’s a great chance to turn a boring river trip into an exciting adventure!
Plus, there are a variety of companies that offer tours so you’ll have a ton to choose from.
2. Visit Boston During Sail Week And You’ll Get To See The Tall Ships
It doesn’t matter what time of year it is because you can always catch one of these events around here during summertime.
There are tons of historical ships coming in and out, but some remain for longer periods as well.
1. Check Out The Museum Of Bad Art (MOBA) In Dedham
This is definitely one of the most unusual attractions in Massachusetts, but also one of the best! It’s basically an art museum that showcases paintings that are well… to put it nicely – they’re bad.
It’s a very interesting way to give attention to these works because this is what they were originally trying to accomplish anyways. So if you want to see something different then check this place out for sure!
