In case you didn’t know, I love a good skinny margarita recipe. Skinny margs are always fresher, lighter, and somehow healthier. Count me in!
It’s pretty easy to put together a good skinny margarita recipe at home, but I love trying flavored margaritas, so when I made this coconut margarita almost by mistake and realized how low calorie it is, I had to share.
I don’t like when a coconut margarita is too heavy on the coconut, and this cocktail is just the perfect amount. It’s also fresher coconut ingredients, so it doesn’t taste like any coconut flavored syrups.
I also don’t love cocktails that are overly sweet, which is one of my favorite things about a good skinny margarita recipe. This concoction is perfectly sweet without being overpowering!
I put this skinny coconut margarita recipe together pretty haphazardly one day (using whatever ingredients I had in the house) but it’s now way up there as one of my favorite drinks any time of the year.
The Coconut Milk
I like to use simple coconut milk out of a can so that it comes out really creamy. I’m sure that you could also use thinner coconut milk (in the milk section at the grocery store) if you like your skinny margarita on the thinner side.

The Coconut Water
I like my drinks slightly fizzy, so I top this skinny margarita recipe off with a splash of fizzy coconut water. There are tons of choices (Vita Coconut and Harmless Harvest are the ones I usually use) at your grocery store.
If you’d prefer to top it off with soda water you can easily do that as well, but I find that the coconut water gives this skinny margarita recipe a fun flavor.
The Limes
As always, I highly, highly recommend using fresh limes. There’s literally nothing like fresh fruit juice in a drink, and in a skinny margarita, you really notice the freshness.
You don’t have to have any fancy equipment to make this drink. I simply squeeze my limes directly into the shaker using my hands. If you like your drink a little more sour, just add a bit more fresh lime juice.
If you do use pre-bought lime juice, I recommend finding unsweetened juice at the grocery store instead of using sweetened lime juice from the liquor store.
The Tequila & Agave
I generally use any silver tequila for this recipe, with Patron as my first choice. You do want to use a decent tequila when making a skinny margarita, because you’ll taste it more due to the thinner ingredients (instead of tasting the old, bitter mix).
Other great options are Hornitos, Casa Noble Crystal, and 1800 Tequila Silver.
I also don’t use any simple syrup or sugar because of the agave, which I find gives a skinny margarita a really high end, smooth taste.
You’ll need to find agave nectar if you want to achieve similar results. Some liquor stores sell it, although it can be hard to source depending on the area. If you don’t have luck, you can also buy it on Amazon (this one is my favorite).
The Shaker
I do recommend having a shaker before making this drink. While you could technically stir it up in a glass, you don’t get the same foam on the top or the same smoothness in the cocktail itself.
Literally any shaker will work to create this coconut margarita recipe. I use the 24 Ounce Cocktail Shaker that I got on amazon. For glasses, I use this 12-piece Glass Set that’s especially great for parties because they’re so durable.

Instructions
This drink is also really fresh (something I’m picky about with margaritas) and can be garnished with a lime or even a slice of fresh coconut, if your grocery store sells them. I also love the Trader Joe’s frozen coconut wedges!
Most of these ingredients are available at any grocery store, and fizzy coconut water is super popular so you can get it literally everywhere.
