Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate Recipe

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate RecipeHot chocolate reminds me of coming into the house after sledding and cozying up with a nice cup of cocoa. I realized later that a good hot chocolate recipe is super underrated. Sure, you can make it the generic way or use a mix, but a good hot chocolate recipe from scratch really can’t be beat.

I also love adding fun flavors! Peppermint is pretty common, as is Nutella and peanut butter, but I wanted to try out something new using salted caramel.

Salted caramel is sweet but salty (obviously) so it makes a great extra flavor. Fair warning: this isn’t a Starbucks copycat recipe, and although I love my Starbucks I personally think it’s a little bit better.

I like to keep any hot chocolate recipe as simple as possible for when you need it in a pinch, so I’ve included the full version (with make your own caramel) as well as the quick version (with pre-made caramel sauce).

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate Recipe (Full Version)

Servings: 2 (smaller mugs)

  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (bittersweet if possible)
  • A small pinch of sea salt
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • Whipped cream, cocoa powder, or salted caramel flakes for garnish

1. Mix the sugar in a small bowl with a few drops of water until it is slightly damp.

2. Preheat a small sauce pan. Once it’s hot, add the sugar and stir it continuously. Stir until it is a darker, tan color.

3. Stir continuously while you slowly pour in the milk. Stir out any chunks.

4. Remove the pan from the heat when the milk is simmering (not boiling). Add the chocolate chips and continue to stir until everything is melted.

5. Add a pinch of salt and taste test. Top with whipped cream and caramel or chocolate flakes.
