However, Salem MA restaurants that you like will depend on your own tastes as well as your budget and the vibe you’re looking for.
I added information below each restaurant about the cuisine, vibe, price, and whether or not there’s outdoor seating. After all, those are usually make or break factors for me when I’m trying to choose a dinner spot.

27. Ledger Restaurant
Located right downtown, Ledger is the perfect place for a date! It has beautiful décor that’s reminiscent of an old bank, a 20’s speakeasy vibe, massive ceilings, and delicious food.
The service at Ledger is incredible as well. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a place to celebrate!
The food is exquisite, as well. I have never tried a bad meal at Ledger.
The most popular dish on the menu is their 20oz porterhouse steak that’s topped with blue cheese butter sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and sautéed spinach and mushrooms.
However, our favorite is the Brussels sprouts appetizer, covered with various types of cheese. I don’t even like Brussel sprouts and I yet we always order a few of this one appetizer!
Ledger is definitely one of the most upscale restaurants in Salem Massachusetts, so it’s a good place to go if you want to dress up and order a fancy cocktail.

The atmosphere is great for a date or even a family dinner. Sea Level has a trendy vibe, but it’s casual enough to chill out and relax.

25. Turner’s Seafood at Lyceum Hall
Turner’s Seafood is one of my personal favorite restaurants in Salem Massachusetts. We love eating at Turner’s during all four seasons!
The restaurant offers a variety of fresh catches from the sea (haddock, clams calamari, lobsters, fresh oysters, etc.) as well as house smoked and cold meats, prime rib, steak, and fresh pasta dishes made daily.
The menu at Turner’s is really enormous! This is one of the best “catch-all” Salem MA restaurants – everyone will find something they like, even folks who aren’t fans of seafood.
I recommend the calamari, oysters, and bread side to start. We love the lobster and the pasta dishes too! Plus, the espresso martinis are really yummy and affordable.
Turner’s also has a full-service seafood market that has been in business for 70 years. They offer many different types of fish to customers, so you can take fresh fish home with you.
During the summer, you can sit outside at Turner’s, but the inside is super cozy, with wood paneling and real fireplaces, so we love eating here during the colder months, too.
Cuisine: Seafood, general American options

23. Bella Verona
If you want a true Italian restaurant, look no further than Bella Verona. They have an incredible menu, with great portions and prices for how much food you get!
The stuffed shells are my favorite dish to order here. It also has great wood-fired pizzas that come out piping hot because they’re made in the pizza oven. In addition to their appetizers and pizzas, Bella Verona also has delicious dinners, like their seafood linguini with a lobster-clam sauce.
The restaurant is very romantic and has dim lighting. It’s a great place to go for a date or any special occasion.
My dad is from Italy, and this is his favorite out of all the Salem Ma restaurants, so that’s saying something! The restaurant itself is tiny and feels so cute inside. Plus, it’s usually a bit easier to get a reservation at Bella Verona, even during the busy seasons.
Cuisine: Authentic Italian

The Howling Wolf is definitely one of the more casual restaurants in Salem MA. Most of the tables are high-tops, or you can sit at the bar, however all of the tables do have full service. Expect to encounter a loud but fun atmosphere!
The margaritas are especially amazing here. If you like a good skinny margarita with real ingredients then you’ll fit right in!

Another great restaurant in Salem MA is Finz. It’s right on the Wharf and is a seafood restaurant that has a wide range of reasonably priced, fresh fish options.
They also have lots of other delicious choices like calamari, oysters, and mussels, all steamed to perfection! I’ve gotten the lobster mac ‘n cheese multiple times here – it’s one of the best lobster dishes in the city.
Finz has a cool, oceanic vibe, with both outdoor and indoor seating. It’s similar to Sea Level (the same people actually own both) but has it’s own distinct vibe.
This is definitely one of my favorite Salem MA restaurants to eat at during the summer! You can sit outside and check out all the gorgeous boats at the marina.

16. Adriatic Restaurant
For an upscale night out at an Italian restaurant, I recommend going to Adriatic Restaurant. It’s located right on Chestnut Street and is a formal yet comfortable setting.
It has delicious Italian food with small, flavorful portions – perfect for splitting between two people. My favorite is the calamari appetizer because it comes fried in batter and served over a bed of sautéed spinach. The rice balls are also amazing.
While Adriatic is a bit more expensive, the food is always really good and the drinks are tasty.
We especially love coming here for the ambiance, though we mainly come when we can sit outside (as there’s one back room that feels more like a function room – we try to avoid that). The outdoor area is adorable – it’s definitely a must!
Cuisine: Italian with some upscale American options.

The service is excellent (we’ve never had a waiter/waitress we didn’t love). Picky eaters will love Rockafellas – the menu is huge (think Cheesecake Factory size menu) so there really is something for everyone.
Their Margherita Pizza is excellent along with their burgers, wings, seafood entrees and desserts.
I love the fact that they make fresh mozzarella cheese in house at this restaurant. I also love the fact that they serve premium beers on tap.
Rockafellas often offers daily drink specials so you can save some cash if you get there early enough to take advantage of them.
I like Rockafellas in Salem because there are so many different kinds of music. It’s especially fun to grab a late dinner and stay for when the DJ or band starts playing.

One aspect of Mercy Tavern that helped it to stand out from other restaurants in Salem Ma is the unique menu selection. For example, the Impaler Burger, which consists of a three-pound burger topped with jalapeno peppers, bacon and cheddar cheese, is always a hit.
The Tavern offers many unique burger combos as well as salads and pastas. All menu ingredients are locally sourced and sustainably produced.

This local hot spot is super popular for the lobster dishes that they serve, including lobster dinner, lobster roll, and lobster spaghetti. You can also find other great seafood plates here such as crab cakes, scallops, clam chowder, oysters on the half shell, and more.
With an old-fashioned atmosphere, this is a family friendly restaurant where you can enjoy delicious fresh fish. In addition to the full seafood plates, you can also find here some batter fried dishes such as onion rings and fish & chips.
Folks who don’t eat seafood will fit right in, since there’s other options on the menu like hamburgers and cheeseburgers, salads, sandwiches, soups, and more.
No matter what you order, all the seafood is fresh and quality. Typically, the shrimp and lobster are caught from the Atlantic ocean just three hours before it is served to customers!

For an old-school, fancier whisky bar vibe, go to The Tavern at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem MA. This lounge/restaurant has an extensive menu and pretty tasty food – they have a bunch of appetizers like cheese plates or mussels.
When I come here, it’s always for the Filet Mignon dip served with French bread – it’s fantastic! If you’re into steak, they also have a nice 26 Oz porterhouse that’s just amazing for sharing with a bunch of people.
For drinks, The Tavern has some cool signature cocktails like the Witch Hunt – if you’re looking to try something really fancy and extravagant, I think this is an excellent choice.
However, I really can’t say enough good things about the espresso martini. In fact, this is one of my favorite bars and restaurants in Salem Massachusetts to get an espresso martini. It’s super frothy, with whipped cream on top, and is more like a dessert drink.
The vibe in the lounge is really old school, with old floors, carpeting, massive brown leather chairs at eat table, and low lighting.
We love the Tavern at the Hawthorne Hotel during every season, but it’s especially one of our favorite Salem MA restaurants on a cold night!

Love arcade games? Now, you can play games while you drink and eat at the Bit Bar. It’s located in the old jail in Salem and is said to be haunted, but even without the spooky thrill, the Bit Bar is a really cool place to spend a night.
This really fun, hip sports bar has a bunch of video games from the 80s and 90s – they have Pacman, Donkey Kong, Street Fighter 2 or Mortal Kombat, for example. Even if you’re not that into gaming, the Bit Bar is still an incredible place to go.
I think it’s especially awesome during the summertime since they have an outdoor patio area where you can hang in Salem MA. They’ll serve beer, wine and cocktails out there if the weather is nice!
If you’re going with friends, you might want to get a bunch of appetizers. Otherwise, I suggest trying their classic wings – they come in hot or BBQ. Try out their pizza too – it’s fantastic and is totally unlike any other pizza you’ll find in Salem.
