A Vintage Lookbook: Style Throughout the Decades

The history of fashion is so fascinating! Looking back through the decades, you can easily see the pieces of fashion that are trendy now. There’s usually at least one thing from each decade that you can incorporate into everyday outfits!

I’ve put together a simple vintage lookbook showing about 10 photos from each decade. I have also included the main trends from each decade!

1910’s

Trends:

  • The S Bend Corset (changing posture)
  • Shift away from hourglass figure and towards leisure apparel
  • Hemlines above the ankle = hobble skirts
  • Lace up boots
  • Decorated hairpins
  • Beaded purses
  • Draping blouses and necklines

 

 

1920’s

Trends:

  • Costume jewelry
  • T-strap shoes
  • Sheer stockings
  • Long, flat dresses and coats
  • Close fitting hats
  • Bobbed hair
  • Drop waisted dresses

1930’s

Trends:

  • Long, flowing gowns
  • Faux-fur collars
  • Hats worn at an angle
  • Higher, cinched waists (often using belts)
  • Cuts to create a tall and slender appearance 

1940’s

Trends:

  • Padded (larger) shoulders with a high waist
  • A-line skirts to the knee
  • High waisted, wide leg pants
  • Put together and cheerful ensembles
  • Bright red lips
  • Hourglass figure

1950’s

Trends:

  • Tea length swing dresses
  • Pencil and circle skirts
  • Peter pan collared blouses
  • Headscarves and hair flowers
  • High wasited pants

 

1960’s

Trends:

  • Short and shapeless shift dresses
  • Psychedelic colors and patterns
  • Button down shirts and sweaters
  • Stockings and tall socks
  • Vinyl shoes
  • Hippie fashion

1970’s

Trends:

  • Peasant blouses
  • Jumpsuits and pant suits
  • Granny dresses and hippie dresses
  • Prairie print
  • Wide leg bootcut pants
  • Warm colors

1980’s

Trends:

  • Big hair with lots of mousse and gel
  • Power suits with large shoulder pads
  • Pop colors
  • An excessive mix of texture and color
  • Bangle bracelets and long pearl necklaces
  • Larger than life accessories

1990’s

Trends:

  • Bare midriffs
  • Grunge and alternative rock style
  • Neon colors
  • Leggings and exercise wear
  • High shine fabrics
  • Denim
